While so much is up in the air right now as far as whether or not we will be in person for school in the fall, I’ve been researching mask options for most of the summer. Hopefully most schools will provide some sort of face covering, but realistically it’s probably best to be prepared.
There are so many choices out there (thank you masks for becoming a popular accessory and therefore pretty!), but since I teach preschool, I have a few requirements for my PPE:
1.) With preschoolers there isn’t really “social distancing”, so I need something that will protect my entire face.
2.) I need to consider all of the learners in my classroom, therefore I’m leaning towards a clear mask option. Many children in my age group are in speech therapy, and being able to see my mouth will help with their own development. It also will help them to see my facial expressions and help us connect!
3.) It’s preschool, it needs to be cute but I don’t want too much of the “live, life, love” vibe.
After a lot of research, I’ve decided to wear a face shield as well as a face mask while I’m with students. Thankfully, I found these adorable face shields from Thirdkind Studio and purchased the “fruit, flowers, rainbows” option. As a bonus (From their website) “10% of proceeds from these shields will be donated to Data 4 Black Lives, an organization whose mission is to use data science to create concrete and measurable change in the lives of Black people.”
If you are looking for a regular (non clear panel) mask, I’ve heard great things about these silk masks. Since I know breaking out has been an issue, they look really comfortable and will be more gentle on your skin. This Etsy shop also has some really colorful and fun masks that would be great for elementary teachers. These masks from J.Crew are really preppy and great if you like blue and white. My kids have this set from Little Goodall and love them, they have adult sizes!
Finally, I think I found THE perfect teacher mask. This one has a flap for your water bottle!!!
